TUESDAY

DAY #5

Activities:  Introduce the class chapter book, Tuck Everlasting, and read for 5 min. and discuss.  Harvest vocab from this story.  Explain why and how we build our vocab using p. 1 and 2 of “Vocabulary Drills”.  Do p. 3 - 5 w/whole group to practice vocab building skills.  Apply the new skills to the words harvested from Tuck.

Evaluation:  Read stories, The Talent Contest and Miss Alaineus;  choose 5 personal vocab words from main selection

 

 

WEDNESDAY

DAY #6

Activities: Listen to Miss Alaineus on CD.  Identify and define vocab for story including personal vocab.  Work in small groups to look up definitions using a dictionary.  Do PB – 1 on own and check whole group. Explain to class that we will be having a Vocabulary Parade on Monday.  Go over the expectations w/class.  Read Tuck for 5 min. and discuss.  Introduce the literary elements of characterization and plot using p.146 of “Measuring Up” workbook. Apply these concepts to our chapter book up to this point.

Evaluation:  Check PB – 1; read Miss Alaineus and complete an elements chart

 

THURSDAY

DAY #1

Activities:  Review literary elements on p. 146 of “Measuring Up” workbook.  Read chapter book Tuck for 5 min. and apply the concepts to the characters. Read story selection and share elements charts (HW) w/a partner.  Edit charts.  Go over literary elements of Miss Alaineus w/whole group. 

Evaluation:  Check literary elements charts; read story selection for understanding and fluency; study vocab; work on vocabulary parade costume idea

 

FRIDAY

DAY #2

Activities:  Review concepts of character and characterization on p. 162 of “Measuring Up”.  Read chapter book Tuck for 5 min. and apply this concept to the characters in our book.  Reinforce concept by reading from “Spaghetti Legs” on p. 162 and completing activity pages up to p.165 w/a small group.  Read excerpt from “Spaghetti Legs” and go over answers w/whole group.  

 

Evaluation:  Check p. 164 and 165; teacher observation and discussion; read story selection and study vocab for a test on Tuesday; choose a word for the vocabulary parade on Monday and create a costume

DAY #5

Activities:  Review 4 types of sentences.  Create an example using events in Tuck for each sentence type on the Smart Board.  Complete GPB – 1 and 2 w/whole group.

Review concept of short vowels.  Introduce words for Spelling List #1 which reinforces the spelling of words w/short vowel sounds.  Categorize the words based on vowel sounds on the Smart Board.

Evaluation:  Check student work; teacher observation; complete PB – 7 in cursive

 

WEDNESDAY

DAY #6

Activities:   Work w/a partner to create one example of each sentence type using a word bank on the board that includes reading vocab words and spelling words.  Partners will share their examples with other groups.  Discuss any challenges in the assignment.  Do p. 5 of “Scholastic Grammar” w/whole group.Check PB – 7 (HW).  Work in small groups to create rhyming words to go with our spelling words.  Share lists and discuss the spelling patterns and the short vowel sounds they hear. 

Evaluation:  Teacher observation and discussion; check student work; complete SPB – 4

 

THURSDAY

DAY #1

Activities:  Read example sentences from Tuck for each type of sentence.  Students will identify the sentence types.  Discuss the alternate names for the four sentence types.  Do p. 6 of “Scholastic Grammar” on own and check whole group.

Check SPB – 4 (HW). Work w/a partner to study spelling words.  

Evaluation:  Teacher observation; check student work; complete GPB – 3 and 4

 

FRIDAY

DAY #2

Activities:  Check GPB – 3 and 4 (HW) and review four types of sentences, their alternative names, and proper punctuation.

Play a spelling game to reinforce spelling of words with short vowel sounds. 

Evaluation:  Observe game; check student work; study spelling words for test on Tuesday; study four types of sentences for test on Monday
