Junior Chorus and Senior Concert Choir

Course Syllabus

2010 – 2011

Mr. James H. Rudisill                                               Room 103 (Chorus Room)

Course Description:

The Concert Choir is a co-curricular musical organization designed for those students with an interest in singing.  This group performs music of many styles and musical value at two major concerts each year.  Members of this group in grades 10-12 may audition each year in county, district, regional and state festivals.

General Expectations:

Your musical development and our concerts can only be as good as our rehearsals, and the only key to success is hard work and a commitment to excellence.  The following expectations will be the foundation of the rehearsal procedures of Concert Choir:

·         Take responsibility for your own development as a musician.

·         Every time you sing, make it a quality experience.

·         Work to master the basic musical skills.

·         Develop an attitude of wanting to improve every day.

·         Be willing to try new things.

·         Display an attitude of effort at all times.

·         Come to class prepared to work and learn.

·         Be present for all rehearsals and performances.

·         Listen carefully during rehearsals.  Critical listening improves the quality of the choir.

·         Show a willingness to work with others.  Concert Choir is a “TEAM EFFORT”.

·         Respect the effort of others.

·         Practice concert etiquette at all times.

·         Make a positive contribution, don’t be a distraction to the choir.

·         Enjoy the experience of making beautiful music.

Procedures:

·         Enter and exit the music room quietly.

·         Get our folder from the shelf and sit in your assigned seat in a timely manner.

·         Keep food, candy, and gum out of class.

·         Ask to leave class only when absolutely necessary.  You MUST always use the “Sign-out Book” and Student Planner.

·         Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

·         Assume an attitude of attentiveness during the entire rehearsal.

·         When the director is ready to begin, all talking should cease.

·         Wait for teacher dismissal at the end of the period.

·         Obey classroom rules.

Grading:

Concert Choir grades will be given for Academic Standards Mastery and Work Ethic.  Grades will be assessed each grading period according to the following formula:

·         Daily Group Rehearsal Skills based upon –

o   Correct posture

o   Participation

o   Attentiveness

o   Vocal production

o   Respect for others

o   Willingness to follow class procedures

·         Singing Assessments –

o   Individual private assessments will be made at least once a semester.

o   Group assessments, ranging from quartets through octets, will be more informal and performed in front of the class.

·         Concert Performances

·         Written exams on the mechanics of the musical score

·         Sectional attendance

Sectionals:

Due to the large size of this class, vocal sectionals will be offered. These small group sectionals, scheduled according to individual voice parts, will be conducted on a “pull-out” program.  You must be excused by your regular classroom teacher to attend sectionals.  If you are failing a class, you may not be excused.  You are requested to attend at least TWO sectionals per marking period for grading purposes.  Sectionals will be offered alternating periods 1 and 2, period 3, and if necessary period 4.  In addition to the above mentioned periods, sectionals can and will be offered before and after school by appointment only.

Folders:

Each student will be assigned a numbered rehearsal folder.  Folders are kept on the shelf just inside the Chorus Room door.  Students are responsible for all materials in the folder and should be prepared, with a pencil, to make musical markings in the score.

Concert Attire:

Concert attire for Junior Chorus will consist of:

·         Ladies – black skirt (discreet in length), white blouse or top, black dress shoes.

·         Gentlemen – black dress slacks, long sleeve white dress shirt, a long tie, black dress shoes.

Concert attire for Senior Concert Choir will consist of:

·         Ladies – black dress (solid color) with discreet neckline, straps/sleeve and hemline for the concert stage, black dress shoes (no flip-flops)

·         Gentlemen – black dress slacks, long sleeve white dress shirt, a long tie, black dress shoes.

Course Outline:
