K-6 Basketball Unit

1.  Given a class session, students will demonstrate respect, cooperation, integrity, teamwork, and sportsmanship while in class and during games.

10.4&10.5

Focus:  Students will be working with group’s teams and partners.  Students are expected to follow all class rules.  The four main class rules are; respect self and others, play fair, listen and follow directions, and keep all body parts to yourself.

2.  Given a warm-up students will work to increase, cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility by participating in fitness stations.

Focus:  Station 1- sit-ups, Station 2- push-ups/phantom chair/dancing, Station 3- Jumping jacks/line jumps/jump rope,  Station 4- Sprint/Jog

Equipment:  2 cones, jump ropes, 2 mats

3.  Given a class session, students will learn the skills involved with the game of basketball by participating in a variety of activities and games.

 Focus:  Students will learn and practice dribbling with hands, crossover dribble, the bounce pass, and chest pass, the lay-up, and set shot. 

Equipment:  1 basketball for each student.

Teacher Observation, Class Participation

Question and Answer Session at the end of class about the critical elements of each skill learned 

4.  Given a class session, students will use the skills acquired in basketball by participating in a variety of small sided games.

10.4&10.5

Focus: Students will participate in the following games to increase their skill levels; (K-2)red light green light dribble, hula hoop dribbling, monster in the forest, dribble frenzy, card sharks dribble and catch, (3-5) Be annoying, sharks and minnows, dribble speedway cha-ha dribble, Dribbling maze, space invaders, the mystery passing game, team shot and other small sided games.  (6th) freeze, shooting basketball stars, bottle cap basketball, basketball mania, and other small sided games.    

 Equipment:  1 basketball for each student, music, hula hoops, poly spots, cones, bottle caps, Frisbees, bean bags,

Teacher Observation Class Participation. Skills Test the dribble and set shot. Peer evaluations.

5.  Given a game session students will work to enhance skills learned by participating in a tournament between classes. (4th-6th grades)

10.4&10.5

Focus:  The 4th through 6th grades will have a tournament at the end of the unit.  The two 4th grade places will play each other, then the two 5th grade classes, and the two 6th grade classes. 

Equipment:  1 basketball

Teacher observation and class participation.  Authentic assessment.

Students are expected to participate in all activities.

Students are expected to put their best effort forth.

 

Affective:

1.      Display a positive attitude for physical activity.

2.      Display respect for self and others

3.      Display respect, cooperation, teamwork, honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship while in class.

4.      Use communication in a socially responsible manner.

 

Cognitive:

1.      Develop and understanding of procedures and rules for each activity. 

2.      Acknowledge rules and procedures while in the physical education setting.

3.      Identify different locomotor movements.

4.      Identify and engage in physical activity

 

Psychomotor:

1.      Develop locomotor and nonlocomotor movements.

2.      Develop skills necessary to participate in individual sports and lifetime fitness.

3.      Develop skills necessary to participate in a team sport.

Fitness:

1.      Demonstrate cardiovascular endurance.

2.      Demonstrate muscular strength and endurance.

All activities are modified for the appropriate developmental stages of growth.
